Orrcon Steel and SFA land Brisbane International Airport Expansion project.

Steel Fabrications Australia has built two new 58 metre link bridges as part of Brisbane Airport’s $120 million International Terminal Northern precinct expansion.

Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Brisbane Airport has two major terminals servicing 31 airlines flying to 82 destinations around the world.  It is the third-largest airport in Australia by passenger numbers with nearly 23 million passengers travelling through the airport in FY17, a figure expected to grow to nearly 50 million by 2034.

The 100 per cent Australian made project was a significant achievement in a short time frame.

Since 1998, Steel Fabrications Australia (SFA) has grown to become one of Australia’s largest steel fabrication and erection companies, specialising in building industrial commercial projects which include bridges, walkways, stairs, frames, towers and pipe racks to name a few.

As SFA continues to grow, so does its relationship with Orrcon Steel.

Project Manager Simon Lake said, “SFA have used Orrcon Steel for at least 10 years because of their high quality Australian product.”

Laing O’Rourke and Steel Fabrications Australia wanted to keep the steel supply local and for this they could not look past Orrcon Steel.

The complex project delivered several challenges for the SFA team.

Working around live operations at the airport meant that larger components of the bridge frames were fabricated off-site at their Yatala facility and delivered around the night time flight schedules across the taxiways. “Three quarters of the connections were changed to bolted splices to reduce site assembly times,” Mr Lake said.

With short procurement lead times SFA and Orrcon Steel collaborated to successfully complete the project on time.

“Orrcon Steel supplied 160 tonnes of RHS cut to length in a short period with a 100 per cent accuracy rate,” Mr Lake said.
