Orrcon Steel drive for greater diversity and inclusion

15/03/2018

To support our journey towards a more inclusive and diverse workforce, Orrcon Steel is committed to ensuring there is a higher representation of women in the steel industry.

Women remain underrepresented in Australia’s manufacturing industries with 26 per-cent of women making up Australia’s entire manufacturing workforce, according to an Australian Bureau of Statistics labour force survey.

In 2018 Orrcon Steel has continued its focus on creating a diverse and inclusive team.

Orrcon Steel’s National Human Resources Manager Bree Thomas said, “we wanted to be more representative of the communities in which we operate and this has led to more females being employed in Orrcon Steel and Metalcorp and an increase in diversity of background. No longer do you require previous experience in the Manufacturing, Distribution or Steel industry to join our business,” Ms Thomas said.

In a recent internal survey, it was also revealed that Orrcon Steel’s workforce represents over 40 different countries.

“Although diversity has been a huge focus, one thing we will be focussing more on in 2018 is how to be more inclusive,” Ms Thomas said.

One of Ms Thomas’s favourite quotes is from Author Verna Myers who said, “Diversity is being invited to the party, inclusion is being asked to dance.” Ms Thomas said “inclusion is the key to maximising the benefits of having a diverse team or workforce and to enhancing and growing employee engagement”.

Orrcon Steel and Metalcorp’s Diversity Council was founded to create a national centralised approach to our business operations.

“The Diversity Council ensures that as a business we can embrace diversity, actively exchange ideas and drive continuous improvement in a way that makes sense for all of our sites,” Ms Thomas said.

“There is a representative in each State that anyone within the business can contact to share ideas with. This representative is also the conduit between the Council and the business to ensure that what we do and focus on is relevant for the business and the communities in which we operate” she said.

At Orrcon Steel we strongly believe that people are the essential foundation to our long-term success, that’s why we are big on developing our employees to their full potential and beyond.

Our doors are always open to fresh ideas and talent and we value diversity and promote an inclusive and supportive work environment for all.
