The Orrcon Story

While young in name, Orrcon’s background derives from one of Australia’s iconic business brands – Hills Industries, which was founded in the 1940s. In October 2000, Orrcon was established through the merger of the structural tube operations of Welded Tube Mills Australia and the Precision Tubing Division of Hills Industries.

The structural tube business of Welded Tube Mills of Australia was formed in the late 1980s. The objective was to develop an alternative supplier to the then Tubemakers of Australia owned by BHP-subsequently Onesteel and Palmer Tube Mills businesses which became Smorgon - Both the manufacturing operations of these businesses are now part of Onesteel.

The merger proved highly successful and has provided a sound base for Orrcon’s rapid expansion over the last seven years. The Orrcon name brings with it 80 years of collective experience of running a thriving business – proudly holding strong market positions in both Precision and Structural Tubing, and forging ahead in markets which include the “Big End of Town Construction” and Oil, Gas and Water pipelines.

In 2005, Hills Industries acquired 100% of the equity in Orrcon with the purchase of the shares held by Mr. Silvio Pradella. Orrcon is now operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of Hills Industries Limited. About Orrcon

The Orrcon network of Steel and Tube Direct distribution centres are strategically located in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia, thus ensuring a solid distribution network, which is complemented by an extensive spread of distributors and stockists in metropolitan and rural Australia.

Orrcon specialises in the manufacturing of Precision tube, Structural pipe and RHS, water pipe and, API Accredited Oil Gas linepipe, carrying a wide range of sizes and wall thicknesses, with squares ranging from 12.75mm to 400mm, rectangles from 38x25mm to 400x200mm and rounds ranging from 12.7mm OD to 457mm OD. Not only limited to the said sizes, Orrcon is able to tailor product solutions upon enquiry.

To meet business demands, Orrcon has four manufacturing sites with a total of eight mills collectively, which are equipped with state of the art facilities.

The company’s ambitious growth plans is seen through its recent acquisition of the Impressive Group of Companies in Western Australia as well as entry into new markets, release of new products through research and development and expanded manufacturing capabilities.

Orrcon products can be found in Precision Applications such as fencing, automotive equipment and furniture, as well as in Structural Applications ranging from cattle handling equipment, trailer bodies to shade structures.

In recent years Orrcon has set to make its mark in “Big End of Town” construction. Its steel products facilitated the construction of the Crown and Atrium of Gold Coast’s Q1 Luxury Apartments – one of Australia’s most distinct construction projects, also known as the world’s tallest residential tower. Orrcon products have also played a major role in the construction of The Southern Star Observation Wheel – the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre, and transportation infrastructures such as the Brisbane’s Inner Northern Busway, Tugun’s M1 Motorway, and New South Wale’s Westlink M7.

The company currently employs in excess of 550 full time employees plus contractors and consultants in specialised fields.

Orrcon is also a proud sponsor of Ford Performance Racing in the Australian V8 Supercars Championship. V8 Motor Racing revolves around quick decision making, fast paced action in a highly competitive environment – much like how Orrcon views itself as a player in the market.
